How Diet Affects Your Hair Health

Many of our physical attributes are based on genetics. Whether were tall or short, brown-eyed or blue, certain things are uncontrollable.  However, when it comes to the health of our hair, we can encourage its strength and vitality through good habits such as proper nutrition.

Along with providing nutrients that encourage the growth and improve the appearance of our hair, the following foods are full of vitamins and minerals that support overall health and wellness.  Be sure to incorporate them into your diet.

  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Consuming fatty fish, like salmon, twice a week can result in silky and hydrated hair.  Omega 3s may also help reduce depression while improving heart health.  Other sources of Omega 3s include flaxseed oil, chia seeds, walnuts and seafood.
  • Spinach. This leafy green provides magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron and omega-3s acids.  All of these help to reduce hair loss.  Spinach is iron rich and contains sebum, which acts as a natural conditioner for the hair.
  • Eggs. Rich in biotin, this B vitamin found in eggs helps hair to grow and strengthens finger nails too.  A lack of biotin in the diet can lead to hair loss.  Other good sources of biotin include almonds, avocados and salmon.
  • Oats. The iron, fiber, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids stimulate hair growth, making it thick and healthy.
  • Greek Yogurt. This thick and rich source of protein is also very high in vitamin B5.  This vitamin, also known as pantothenic acid, helps improve blood flow to your scalp and stimulate hair growth.

By choosing these nutrient-dense foods that are high in enzymes and phytochemicals, research indicates its possible to influence not only hair growth and fallout, but you can improve hormonal balance and collagen production as well.  Consider reducing the intake of processed foods and alcohol in your diet.  Alcohol can reduce the levels of zinc in your body, dehydrating your hair and causing it to break.  Over processed foods convert to sugar during digestion and may cause your hair to thin.
